Radio Frequency in NZ, May 2017

SPECTRUM MATTERS
WITH KEVIN DOVE

For those who attended the Comms Connect 2017 Conference in Wellington recently the opening address from the Manager of RSM Policy and Planning – Len Starling - was welcome news indeed. Not only are our members and radio frequency users within the Land Mobile Radio (LMR) industry going to see a reduction in annual licence fees, we will have more spectrum to play with.

The fee changes announced together with a much-simplified fee category will take effect in late 2017 and represents a 40% reduction for the standard licence category.

Also noted in the RSM Business update is confirmation of the review of the 174-230 MHz (Band 3) that the Minister for Communications has decided to allocate spectrum for three new users:

  • The Internet of Things (IoT)
  • Land Mobile Radio (LMR)
  • The NZ Defence Force

Spectrum has also been set aside to allow for a Digital Audio Broadcasting network, should a decision be made to implement this in future.

The changes to the IoT and LMR Band-3 will be introduced following further consultation with industry in late 2017 and the RFUANZ committee on behalf of our members welcomes the opportunity to be actively involved in the consultation process.
