Radio Frequency in NZ, November 2017

by Laurie Colvin

The Land Mobile radio usage in New Zealand is growing at a very steady rate.  With the possible allocation of a new VHF radio band by the Radio Frequency Service people are probably not aware of the current expansion of the existing channels.  There are two main factors driving the need for more channels,  the introduction of Digital radio and the need for better communication to meet the Health and Saftey requirements.

In the last two years, there are two Radio Companies that have had more than 100 VHF channels allocated for Digital DMR radio use alone in the North Island and this is just the start of the Digital Revolution.  This is a significant increase in the "E" and "EE" bands alone.

The Health and Safety requirements of ensuring workers have communications at all times are also adding to the requirement for radio usage.  To allow compatibility with existing services VHF is often the only answer and the channels. especially in the "EE" band are filling up quickly.

Therefore the need for users of the VHF Radio Spectrum to support the RFUANZ bid for more spectrum allocated is vital, otherwise, we are likely to suffer the consequences for a long time, and the chance of more VHF Spectrum becoming available are very slim.
