Radio Spectrum Management (RSM) has issued the Radiocommunications Regulations (Radio Standards) Notice 2025 in the latest Gazette (2025-go4751). This replaces the 2008 notice.
What’s Actually Changed?
The 2008 framework has been revoked, with the new notice now setting the rules for all radio transmitters and equipment supplied in New Zealand. It’s not a complete overhaul, but there are some points that matter:
- Standards references have been refreshed. Equipment must comply with standards recognised by Standards New Zealand (AS/NZS), ACMA in Australia, ITU, IEC, or any standard the MBIE Chief Executive may later specify. This keeps New Zealand aligned with international practice while allowing for flexibility down the track.
- Supplier accountability is reinforced. Anyone supplying radio gear to the NZ market must hold a valid Supplier’s Declaration of Conformity (SDoC) and keep supporting technical documents (test reports, compliance certificates). RSM can ask for these at any time.
- Scope remains broad. The notice applies across the board—handheld radios, wireless mics, IoT devices, broadband gear, you name it.
Why It Matters for Members
For RFUANZ members, the key takeaway is timing: compliance checks need to be up to date before the 24 October enforcement date. Importers and distributors should review their SDoC records now. Installers and end-users may not deal with the paperwork directly, but they’ll feel the benefits – fewer interference issues and clearer spectrum management.
